To reduce the number of demerits on your driving record you can participate in a Defensive Driving Course or a Professional Driver Improvement Course. To avoid a demerit driving suspension, the course must be completed prior to the conviction date of the driving offence which caused your demerit suspension.

You will need to speak with your insurer, but it is possible that the successful completion of a defensive driving course could cause a rate reduction if your insurer agrees.
If you receive a total of 15 or more demerit points within a 2-year period, your driver's licence is automatically suspended for one month.

Demerit points stay on your driver's record (license) and your driver's abstract for 2 years from the date you are convicted of the offense. This means if you get a ticket in person from a law enforcement officer, and you pay the fine, those demerit points will be on your record until 2 years have passed, or you take a demerit reduction course.

There are varying levels, but yes – your license can be suspended in Alberta if you accumulate too many demerit points. Between 8-15 points, you will receive a notice in the mail about your status. Above 15 and your license will be suspended for 1 month. If it continues to happen the license suspension will be longer the 2nd and 3rd times, and you may need to conduct a formal review with the Registrar of Motor Vehicle Services in order to have it reinstated.
You are not allowed to drive while your license is suspended; quickly addressing your demerit allowance in Alberta with a defensive driving course is an excellent option to help maintain your driving privileges.
